A two-story wooden house located in the urban area of Osaka. It is a home for a family of three, a daughter and her husband. The site was rather large for an urban area, but some of the surrounding buildings were old and decrepit, and there was a possibility that they would be surrounded by buildings of three stories or more. The client wanted to live on the first floor, where he could have a garden where he could keep his dog. We planned to secure sunlight on the first floor as much as possible in the future.
The volume of the second floor was moved as much as possible to the north side so that the shallow winter sunlight would shine into the building. In addition, light from the upper part of the building spreads to the first floor through the atrium above the dining room in the middle of the first floor. In summer, the sun is kept out of the room as much as possible by using eaves and shades.
There are no more partitions or fittings than necessary in the room. The entire first (family-areas) and second floors (private-areas) are one room through the stairs. There are no private rooms on the second floor, but we decided to use curtains to separate them. Until the end of the construction, the family was discussing the allocation of individual areas.
