This retreat in rural Bradley County, Tennessee is located on 40 acres adjacent to the owner’s childhood home. From her current full time residence in Los Angeles, she asked Hefferlin + Kronenberg to design a one-story dwelling to complement the rolling hills and deep lake of the property. The project is envisioned as a seasonal gathering place for friends and family, so that all might share and recollect the simplicity of agricultural living.
The great room encompasses the entire central volume of the house and is bordered by porches on the front and rear. Four bedrooms inhabit the north wing, and the 3 ½ car garage is to the south. Behind the house is a formal composition of pool and pool house. The pool house is designed to reminisce of “dog trot” houses, with the open portion in the middle framing a view to the creek beyond. Past the house and pool house, the landscaping is less formal. A careful placement of heirloom trees will ensure that the structure of the land welcomes the home and its family for generations to come.
