The building was configured as a 3 family when my clients purchased it. They were working with an architect on an extensive renovation to transform it into a 2 family, and sought my help with design direction, material and paint selection, and furniture and décor.
Our goal was to respect the history of the house and highlight original details where possible while adding modern conveniences. I love to strike a balance between old and new.
What were the key challenges?
Because the clients lived in the house during the renovation, construction and design were done in phases. There were also construction delays and pandemic related setbacks along the way. I started working with the clients in early in 2018 and we finished the project in the spring of 2020.
What materials did you choose and why?
I used mostly neutral colors and natural materials, but the palette and textures varied based on the mood that we wanted to create in each room.
The kitchen is bright and white with blue accents. The glossy white surfaces reflect the light that streams through the floor to ceiling windows. It’s a very uplifting space where the family spends a lot of time. They and their guests love to hang out at the dining table banquettes.
The living room is more mellow; the mostly grey and brown palette is grounding, and the textures are more varied and organic; wood, stone, steel, wool. The clients wanted the bedroom to be a really soothing retreat, so I worked with a cool, monochromatic palette and luxe fabrics. We chose the wallpaper first and it really set the tone.
