Located on a quiet cul-de-sac and set within the West Greenwich Conservation Area, this former Victorian School Hall had previously been used as an office prior to becoming derelict.

Having started a family since we last worked with the client on the conversion of a former garment factory in East London, the brief for this project now focussed on creating a functional, child-friendly home that complemented their architectural and aesthetic style preferences.

This required a considered design approach with a new layout and reduced palette of materials that responded to the client's requirements whilst respecting the character of the existing heritage building and its context.

Arranged over two floors, the property has been comprehensively refurbished and upgraded to provide a functional contemporary home suitable for a growing family. At raised ground floor, the new layout has been arranged to take advantage of the large lateral open floor plan and double-height floor-to-ceiling heights, with auxiliary spaces compactly organised at one end in order to maximise living space.

An elevated mezzanine sundeck with a large retractable skylight provides an additional living area whilst creating a new connection between the internal and external spaces. At lower ground floor level, all three bedrooms face onto a newly excavated private sunken courtyard.

This simple yet detailed project located within a prominent Conservation Area has ensured that an important local building is preserved and its lifespan extended.

Having become derelict and dilapidated, the Hall had fallen into disrepair and was no longer suitable for occupation. By repurposing and thermally upgrading the property, we have provided high-quality, functional residential accommodation suitable for modern living that maximises the potential of the building whilst maintaining the client’s needs at its core.
