Throughout the design process, we reflected on how to create a sense of inner freedom and comfort within the home—a place where people can move, observe, interact, converse, and experience their surroundings with ease. It is almost a state of wu wei, or effortless being, dwelling within the house. The program accommodates everyday family life, including a living room, kitchen and dining area, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and the necessary supporting spaces.

To create openness and encourage spontaneous interactions between spaces, the design volumes are organized through a series of raised and lowered elements arranged in an asymmetrical order. This composition unintentionally creates additional voids and more intriguing layers of depth, both inside and out. The spatial sequence guides occupants through a range of changing conditions, making each place feel more dynamic and alive.

The experience moves from expansive spaces into narrower passages. As one proceeds, the ceiling gradually lowers, revealing moments where low-ceilinged spaces sit alongside taller ones. These variations make the sense of refuge more pronounced when inhabiting the lower spaces. Natural light further enriches this experience, entering through a soaring opening in the roof and revealing different atmospheres within. In this sense, many of the spatial impressions perceived by the occupants emerge from an instinctive desire to seek a sense of balance within the home.

These changing atmospheres are also shaped by the tonal qualities of the materials. A restrained palette of light beige, brown, grey, and wood—natural hues brought together through low-contrast relationships—creates a gentle visual rhythm. This subtle modulation establishes an enduring sense of ease and evokes a distinctly resort-like quality throughout Phi Long House.
