A new architectural skin—lightweight and reversible—overlays the existing square, configuring a horizontal intervention that transforms a space of passage into a place of identity, safety, and inclusion.
The project redefines the relationship between architecture, landscape, and social life within the Kilometro Rosso, between the red wall by Jean Nouvel and the contemporary headquarters of Confindustria Bergamo designed by Riccardo Minelli.
The intervention originates from a technical requirement to mitigate seasonal thermal fluctuations and takes the form of an elevated platform that reorganizes flows, paths, and areas of pause, integrating with the green system and introducing new conditions of environmental comfort.
The square is conceived as a continuous urban carpet, defined by a large central ring that connects the main entrances and blends into the surrounding vegetation. A transverse diagonal generates a double-tiered stepped seating system capable of accommodating up to 90 people, functioning both as collective seating and as a stage for temporary events.
Secondary rings ensure continuity of movement toward the other buildings of the technology park and support an elevated vapor installation.
The vapor “cloud” integrates microclimatic functions with an installative dimension, introducing a dynamic, seasonal sensory component that brings technology and nature into dialogue.
The elevated platform is constructed with a floating floor made of recyclable composite wood, incorporating radiant coils for winter heating. The decking pattern follows a calibrated graphic sequence inspired by the adjacent infrastructural corridor, reinterpreted as a relational pattern.
The landscape design, developed in collaboration with architect Sara Carrara, is conceived as an active scenic backdrop. Three specimens of Liquidambar styraciflua form the compositional core, accompanied by grasses with high seasonal variability that introduce movement, texture, and biodiversity.
The square thus becomes a hybrid and flexible urban space in which architecture, landscape, and environmental devices contribute to the construction of a multisensory experience and to a new tempo of social interaction within a productive and technological context.
