The modernist railway station in Bytom was built in 1929–1930 on the site of the previous nineteenth-century building. Along with the station building, a free-standing platform hall was constructed to provide a roof over platforms 2, 3 and 4.
The hall has a footprint of approximately 40 × 140 metres and a gable roof. Its structure consists of steel frames spanning about 40 metres. The hall is 13.5 metres high at the ridge. Longitudinal stability is provided by frame bracing in the outer bays and by a system of roof bracing. The structural elements are joined with rivets.The platform hall in Bytom is one of only three preserved halls of this kind in Poland. For many years, it was in poor technical condition.
In 2024, the hall underwent modernisation. The load-bearing structure was cleaned and protected against corrosion. The existing roof covering, the sheet-metal cladding on the gable walls and the maintenance walkways were removed.
The roof was covered with new zinc-titanium sheet metal, and timber soffit boarding was installed on the inside. The foundations and the structural bracing elements were reinforced. The hall’s original appearance was restored. The southern wall was glazed, and a rooflight was installed. The gable walls were also glazed, and illuminated signs were reinstated on them, designed to evoke the form of the original neon signs.
