S9 Architecture designed and master planned Atlanta’s Ponce City Market, a former Sears, Roebuck & Co. distribution center re-envisioned as a vibrant community space and a model of urban redevelopment.
The initial phase of the project included approximately 500,000 SF of office, 500 residential units and 300,000 SF of retail. Phase 2 added a new 400 unit residential building and 90,000 SF of office space. This mixed-use complex for Jamestown saw a neglected historic property adapted into a site that knits together the surrounding neighborhoods, enhancing their character with curated retail and dining options, residential units, and flexible office space.
The original early 20th century building had expanded over the decades, forming an impenetrable super block at the center of four residential neighborhoods. S9 Architecture, in collaboration with Executive Architect: Choate + Hertlein, used creative interventions to modify the site into a porous public crossroads, accessible from all sides.
The complex connects directly with the city’s BeltLine multi-use trail, linking Ponce City Market with the larger urban context to create an innovative shopping, dining, and entertainment destination for all Atlantans.
In 2016, Ponce City Market was the recipient of the prestigious Urban Land Institute (ULI) Global Award for Excellence and in 2018, it received The Outstanding Building of The Year (TOBY) award by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA).
