Set on the southern slope of Palmela, beneath the presence of the castle and in close relationship with the Arrábida landscape, this former farmhouse is a place shaped by time, topography and rural memory.
In poor condition and altered by successive interventions, the proposal is driven by the desire to recover the building’s original identity, preserving its elements of interest and removing the additions that have progressively changed its reading over time.
Through an analysis of the existing building and historical documentation, the project sought to understand its original configuration. Thick walls, openings, vaulted ceilings and different roof levels bear witness to this history, which the project aims to recover without increasing the existing built area or volume.
The different spaces of the former farmhouse are adapted into a six-bedroom (T6) residence, making use of the existing layout and the changes in level across the slope. At the heart of the house, the kitchen becomes the gathering space for everyday life, directly connected to the entrance courtyard and the rural landscape. The living room extends this relationship with the outdoors, while the private spaces are distributed across the different volumes, taking advantage of the solar orientations, views and existing terraces.
The relationship between interior and exterior is strengthened through the restoration of the courtyards, terraces and the access pergola. The landscape intervention also seeks to recover traces of the property’s former agricultural vocation, including the vineyard and fruit trees.
Traditional materials, such as whitewashed walls, red clay roof tiles and painted timber window frames, contribute to integrating the ensemble into its surrounding landscape.
