Set within the bayside region of the Mornington Peninsula, this alteration to an existing family home was shaped by a vision to create a dynamic and highly adaptable environment capable of transitioning seamlessly between intimate daily routines and weekly larger moments of gathering and entertaining. Designed around intergenerational living, the renovation focuses on bringing warmth, flexibility and a stronger sense of identity into the home through carefully considered spatial planning and materiality.

Previously defined by imbalanced proportions, the original entry sequence and adjoining living spaces were reworked to establish greater balance of connection and generosity throughout the home. Kitchen, Dining and Lounge spaces now unfold as a continuous living environment that supports both quieter family rituals and larger social occasions. Anchored by an expansive lounge arrangement inspired by the informality of the conversation pit, the interior encourages gathering, interaction and shared occupation across generations.

The home is designed to accommodate the rhythms of an active extended family, from regular care of young grandchildren to weekly family dinners hosting more than twenty people. Flexible planning and movable elements allow the spaces to evolve throughout the day, creating an interior that feels generous yet intimate in occupation. While refined in atmosphere, the home remains robust and playful, allowing grandchildren to inhabit the spaces freely without compromising the calm and considered character of the interiors.

Continuity throughout the project is reinforced through repeated materials and consistent detailing across key touchpoints of the home. Australian Oak timber flooring extends throughout the interior, while Tasmanian Oak veneer wraps joinery, storage and kitchen elements in warmth and texture. Stone benchtops introduce depth and refinement, balancing the softness and grain of the timber palette while allowing each material to retain its own identity.

Natural light is drawn deep into the plan through expansive openings and a reconfigured spatial arrangement that strengthens visual connection between living spaces and surrounding gardens. Timber, stone and tile shift subtly in tone and texture between spaces, establishing contrast while maintaining a calm and cohesive interior language.

Bathrooms adopt a darker and more intimate material expression, creating quieter moments of retreat within the broader openness of the home. Textured stone surfaces and muted finishes reinforce the tactile qualities of the interior and contribute to the project’s grounded atmosphere.

The project ultimately reflects an interest in balancing pragmatics with atmosphere. Spaces are designed to feel functional and enduring while remaining generous, tactile and deeply connected to the rhythms of everyday family life.
