Résidence Jeanne-Mance

This interior renovation project consists of revamping the kitchen of a typical Mile-End apartment for a culinary, interiors and lifestyle photographer. From the tea ritual to the daily cooking, her aspiration of beauty guided us to create a soft space, bringing calm and contemplation through its natural textures and carefully arranged in harmony.

It is through the dining room, composed of wood furniture in different shades arranged with a light fixture hanging delicately, that we find the kitchen of 12' x 9'-6'', at the end of the apartment. Adjacent to the back terrace and the master bedroom, this is where the day begins and ends. From our first discussions, it became natural for us to propose opening the kitchen to the dining room, both to create exchange between spaces and discourses and to let in all the afternoon light from the end of the apartment. By knocking down the load-bearing wall, redesigning the structure and moving a common duct, the project became feasible.

In order to preserve the existing architectural components of the Montreal triplex, the design offers a main circulation on the terrace, creating three volumes with distinct functions; a counter for cooking, a counter for the sink as well as two high storage units that frame the door.

Through the European lines left as a legacy, a beige and white checkerboard tile rug slips into the space to place the kitchen, like furniture in a living room, to ensure the conviviality and authenticity of our intervention. The ubiquitous white oak and checkerboard floor creates the backdrop for the Calacatta Borghini marble, lime paint, cane and brass accents. The textures and tones blend perfectly, letting the light create different moments in the day, like a canvas for the young professional's collection of ceramic pieces.
