Often when we speak about contemporary homes, brilliant aesthetics and modern design come together in sync with each other to create elegant residential properties that represent luxe value and Pinterest-worthy ideas. However, the essence of the user is often cast aside, when designing these luxury homes with spatial volumes. They tend to lack character, and the stories behind the collectibles; Bespoke pieces, furniture, art, etc. Standing out amidst this crowd of contemporary spaces is the Rohan Joshi residence.
Warm, cozy, modern and chic- and truly representative of its owner, this 1400 sq ft residence is situated in Mumbai. Designed for Rohan Joshi, an extremely popular, 37 year old comedian and writer, the residence features 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a living room, den, powder room and a kitchen. The house is designed keeping in mind the succinct brief provided by the client: A space that is contemporary, open, inviting and crucially- a space that resonated with his personality.
Keeping in mind the design brief as well as the personality of the client, it was decided to keep the shell of the home neutral and monochromatic, with punches of colour emanating through fun patterned tiles, art, accessories and rugs. The house is designed to optimize the influx of natural light, while also creating highlights through the lighting fixtures throughout the space. The entire space is designed with a crisp contemporary meets industrial theme, whilst also incorporating elements that resonate the most with Rohan, at a personal level.
While sticking to the core theme of a modern and minimal Indian home, the designers have experimented with various elements, such as the flooring in the lobby which features an effervescent patterned tile by Bharat Flooring. Maintaining a neutral shell for the space, the main flooring in the living room and kitchen is done up in a neutral, stone-finish grey tile, whereas the three rooms feature a wooden flooring that adds to a soothing, warm feeling throughout the space. The kitchen stands out as a vibrant space with its convivial combination of blue and white, with diagonal stripes running across the hexagon tiling on the floor.
The master bedroom radiates a sense of comfort and relaxation with its familiar, homely yet luxurious aesthetic. A minimal grey bed offsets the white interiors of the room, flanked by the simplistic bedside lights, which add a refined sense of luxury to the space. The aesthetic quality of the space is reinforced by the white-brick back-wall, which adds to the congenial feel of the space. A recessed storage unit also punctuates the bedside, adding functionality to the room, while ensuring that the space remains clutter-free and spacious. This theme is carried forth in the study and the guest room, thereby creating a cohesive experience for the viewer.
All the three bathrooms are distinct in their own way, but have a common theme of using coloured tiles, patterns and wallpapers over a neutral backdrop. This theme is repeated across the entire home in different ways; through the vibrant décor and artwork juxtaposed with the neutral, unassuming interiors. With a liberal usage of Rohan’s collection of posters, art, books and memorabilia across the residence, the residence manifests as a complete reflection of his personality and as a space that represents home for him, and his cats and as a space that can host friends, family and loved ones. Through its seamless and vibrant design, every space in the house contributes to speaking a coherent visual language, wherein the house has the aesthetic and exuberance of a luxurious bachelor pad, yet doesn’t fail to feel like a home.
