In typical fair or convention setups, lounge materials are often discarded after use. This VIP Lounge for Art Stage Singapore, an annual contemporary art fair at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre, was designed to maximise reuse and recycling.
Occupying 480 sqm and accommodating 150 seated or 500 standing guests, the Lounge served as a social and rest area for artists, collectors, curators, and VIPs, as well as a venue for exclusive events. The brief required a prominent, flexible, and easily assembled/disassembled space with recyclable materials.
Inspired by the kaleidoscopic character of Asian arts and culture, the design used carpet as the sole material - for flooring, walls, and seating (plus sleeping) - valued for its softness, acoustic quality, versatility, and colour range. Rolled and unrolled carpets formed zones for interaction and rest, offering a soft, acoustically enhanced retreat from the fair's bustle.
After the event, all carpets were rolled up and reused for other functions.
