Concept:
Roof for 37 resists easy classification. While geographically it occupies a certain footprint, experientially, it unfolds as a living landscape — one that sits at the threshold where the city loosens its grip and the hills begin to assert their presence. Perched along the urban fringe, the residence is enveloped by a rare microclimate of shifting light, drifting clouds, and verdant slopes that almost graze the building’s edge. This constant dialogue with nature becomes the project’s quiet generator, shaping a home that breathes, listens, and responds.
Conceived for a family whose life is shared with an extraordinary constellation of companions, two daughters, two huskies, a cat, and a chorus of thirty exotic birds, the home is designed as an ecosystem rather than a static interior. Despite the abundance of life it shelters, the architecture remains composed and measured. Spaces are layered rather than crowded, expressive without excess, allowing material, colour, and narrative to coexist in calibrated harmony.
The living room establishes the home’s atmospheric intelligence. Wrapped in a green metallic finish that subtly modulates with the sun’s trajectory, the space shifts from soft olive to deep forest hues over the course of the day. This mutable envelope acts as a climatic surface, absorbing and reflecting light like the shaded underbelly of a monsoon cloud. Custom-designed furniture pieces are arranged with a sense of collected ease, while textures and patterns negotiate gently rather than compete. At the centre, a sculptural table inspired by mountain foliage anchors the room, while a bespoke arched artwork, eschewing the conventional TV wall, introduces a mythic meadowscape that dissolves the boundary between interior and terrain.
Adjacent to this, the bar and dining spaces unfold as a carefully composed diptych. The bar leans into a restrained, retro-inflected glamour, its green-washed surfaces and rounded marble counter recalling a softened 1980s nostalgia. Open shelves become intimate galleries for personal artefacts, grounding the indulgence in memory. In contrast, the dining area asserts a quieter formality: an eight-seater marble-topped table on brass legs, richly textured chairs embroidered with avian motifs, and a carved white console that reads recall fossilised forest matter. Art installations and reflective surfaces extend light and perspective, allowing both zones to converse while retaining distinct identities.
The kitchen tempers functionality with emotional resonance. Pastel green cabinetry, a Moroccan blue backsplash, and black-and-white inlay flooring subtly reference the domestic languages of old Mumbai homes. The result is a space that feels both contemporary and remembered, visually restrained yet rich in tactile and cultural memory.
If the house is a symphony, the master bedroom is its crescendo. Here, architecture, light, and ornament converge into a deeply sensorial retreat. The den introduces a lighter register, where cartographic wallpaper transforms walls into narrative surfaces of imagined travel. The guest room, in contrast, retreats into a palette of whites, greens, and golds, layered with craft-led details and restrained ornamentation.
