In Sotogrande, in the south of Spain—where the climate is mild and light accompanies life for most of the year—architecture finds a privileged setting in which to merge with the landscape. To inhabit is to occupy a space continuously, to make it one’s own, to establish an intimate and lasting relationship with it. In this context, Round House emerges as a dwelling that does not merely sit on the site: it inhabits it. Among endless olive groves and on gently sloping terrain, the house stands on a strong, defined platform that asserts its presence and establishes a horizontal plane from which to contemplate the landscape. Six supports anchor themselves into the olive field, holding a roof that shelters them while allowing filtered light to penetrate. Its elevated position offers uninterrupted 360-degree views across the fields, reinforcing the sense of openness and connection to the surroundings. The interior extends outward in the form of a swimming pool, engaging in dialogue with the site’s subtle natural slope.
Concrete is the primary material, articulated through different finishes: textured at the base to allow vegetation to climb and take hold, and smooth above, where it expresses a more refined character. Glass walls dissolve the boundaries between inside and outside, while brown stone steps lead up to the entrance, elevating the approach and anticipating the spatial experience within. Inside, a large open-plan space integrates the living room, dining area, kitchen, and entrance hall, forming the heart of the home.
At the opposite end are two en-suite bedrooms, each connected to its own private courtyard, along with a third shared courtyard that expands the possibilities for light, privacy, and interaction. Access to this wing is through a generous dressing area and a bathroom that becomes the most singular space in the house: a spacious and secluded room conceived as an intimate place for personal connection. At its center, a circular planted patio acts as a private window to the sky, transforming a traditionally secondary function into a primary architectural statement—a true temple of self-care. Dark tones harmonize with the surrounding landscape. The house seeks integration rather than prominence. Marble, lime mortars, concrete, and wood come together in a warm composition that invites a life of calm, balance, and quiet contemplation.
