A 2,000 sf gut renovation in the heart of downtown Brooklyn, created a seamless integration of two conjoining apartments. By opening up the party walls an expansive 50-foot line of east facing windows could flood the interiors with east-facing soft natural daylight, atmospherically changing the space throughout the day.
Simplicity and detail were key, keeping the finishes to a simple palate of white oak and deep rich blue while playing with texture, grain, and accents. A set of full height sliding ribbed doors creates an interior space that can open, acting as a connector, or close providing privacy for guests.
What was the brief?
The clients were a young couple looking to grow their family and create a space that reflected their design aesthetic, a hybrid Asian feel with modern warm tones. When the opportunity arose to purchase the adjacent apartment, they immediately jumped at the opportunity.
The combination of the apartments was to create a two bedroom, three bath with two studies for work-at-home options. Each of the owners had long days and often arose early to catch their clients on other coasts. The loft-like open living and kitchen was important but so was privacy, and harnessing the natural daylight along the eastern 50ft long wall.
What were the solutions?
The interior of the space, pivots around a study that multi-functions as a yoga room and guest bedroom with a built-in murphy bed. The room is also a pass-through leading to the master bedroom and can be connected or separated from the main space through a series of custom fabricated floor to ceiling sliding doors finished with a vertical ribbed pattern.
The active movement plays off of a soji screen system and defines a box when closed and an open platform when open. The ribbed wood patterning extends to the wall finish, and a similar finish in tone and color wraps the ceiling and floor to holistically tie the space together.
