Scholzberg Tower

Scholzberg Tower

On the peak of the hill above my cottage, I bought 7 hectares of land – a meadow with a view that is framed by forests on two sides. Out of sheer joy, we decided to erect a tower on the peak.

Again, using undried, unprocessed boards, we built an entire hollow stack in the shape of a tower, equipped – for the purposes of even drying – with a maintenance staircase. The freely stacked boards were again drawn together with wire rope and anchored to the surrounding rocks.

We complemented the raster of stacked boards with a helix-shaped staircase.

Although this was an experimental construction only designed to last a year or two, the tower ended up surviving seven winters. By then the deformations went beyond the acceptable, so my assistant and I took it apart in a few hours, using the boards for further experiments.

The height of the tower was 12 meters.
