scobel is a live tv talk within which the host Gerd Scobel invites experts from different scientific and cultural areas to investigate current topics. The aim of the talk is to define an independent and objective opinion by consulting the different experts and discussing the issues in an impartial way.
Concept and Design The spiral-shaped arrangement of the studio design is derived from the on-air key visual, the nautilus shell. The center of the spiral starts with the volute table for the round of talks and extends further with the bar table and the back wall with it´s integrated media screens. The horizontal lamellas reflect the interdisciplinary concept of the tv show by symbolizing the different scientific directions, that merge into one common movement, respectively the topic of the talk. The geometry of the set provides a dynamic, but centered composition and offers depth and variety for the cinematography.
Design and Production After the basic design of the complete set, the geometry of the lamellas was precisely defined with a Grasshopper Script to obtain a balanced array of the twofold bent lamellas and to adjust the hight of the backwall to the requirements of the director and the camera team. The precise 3- dimensional drawings then became the template for the production on the CNC machine. The complete backwall of the tv set consists of separable segments on castors with a maxium size of 5x2x3m, that are assembled and dismantled each week, because the studio space is also used for other shows. Therefore all parts and especially the lamellas had to be produced precisely and resilient to ensure that they will fit to each other for a period of 5 years.
The organic shaped table in the center and the bar table are a combination of wood and glass fiber construction, covered with a wood veneer, whose vein follows the round and twofold surface of the tables. To achieve this deformability, the veneer is machined and reinforced on the back with glue threads. Thereby the veneer match is completely retained. This revolutionary process that allows the moulding of veneer three dimensionally without cracking, was developed by the company Danzer. Both the structure of the wood and the texture of the veneer are unchanged in the process. 3D veneers allow the design and industrial production of wood organic shapes. http://www.danzer.com/en/products/sliced-wood/3d- veneer
