Scribner’s Catskill Lodge

Studio Tack as Architects

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge opened in 2016 as a new interpretation of a Catskills classic. In its revitalized state, the 38-room eclectic mountain lodge and 85 seat in-house restaurant Prospect, is a year-round refuge for urban explorers and adventurers looking to enjoy the inspiring nature of the Catskills amidst thoughtful design and welcoming service. Originally built in the 1960’s, today’s Scribner’s brings key players of the Hudson Valley cultural renaissance together at one property, and evokes the region’s sense of exploration, nostalgia and craftsmanship through design, programming and local culinary offerings.

Location

Situated in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, Scribner’s Catskill Lodge sits at the threshold of Hunter, NY. Perched high on a hilltop at the entrance to town, the property is an integral part of the landscape, welcoming visitors and locals alike to the town of Hunter and the Catskills region beyond. Roughly two hours (100 miles) northwest of New York City, Scribner’s is every urbanite’s accessible dream escape.

Design & Concept

Designed by Brooklyn-based creative group Studio Tack, Scribner’s offers guests a reinterpretation of history through a modern lens. Studio Tack took a narrative approach to the design of Scribner’s, showcasing the soul and history of the property. Believing the most magical things are those that arise when and where you least expect them, Scribner’s Catskill Lodge is inviting while at the same time preserves the eccentricities that lend to its charm and character. The design aspect throughout creates a space where the past reads like a fossil imprinted into clean, white rock. From the imposing exterior, resplendent in late modernist glory, guests enter into a wholly unexpected space, beginning with a two-story lobby that streams in ethereal sunlight throughout the day, from overhead skylights.

History

Designed by Guy Chirico, Sr. in 1966, the property’s original design is based on modernist principles. Built during a time of rapid development in the Catskills, the region became a place of escapism for city folk during the mid-century. Today’s interpretation of Scribner’s reflects a new era for the resort while incorporating and honoring the many different identities the property has had over the years.

Guest Rooms

The 38 accommodations are assorted within 12 room type configurations, including two standout unique suites located on the top floor featuring a cozy living space and oversized private balconies. Invoking a carefree-bohemian vibe, the all-white rooms appear clean and modern while incorporating offbeat details of the past with a nod to the area’s craftsmen.

Furniture and decor from local design studios such as Fort Standard and Fern NYC are featured within guest rooms. Inspiring in-room wall art crafted by local artists, Emily Johnson and The Catskill Kiwi, includes landscape photography and hanging hand-woven tapestries, curated specially for Scribner’s. Dark wood floors are layered with vintage rugs by Heirloom Brooklyn and built-in custom seating offers ample gathering spaces in each room.

Keeping with the quirky rhythm of the property’s original architecture, several rooms feature high-peaked ceilings while others offer lofted gathering and sleeping spaces as well as in-room cast iron fireplaces. Terracotta shower tiles line each guestroom bathroom, complemented by modern-day comforts such as overhead rain showers and curated bathroom amenities. Additional amenities available in all rooms include Frette linens, complimentary high-speed internet via WiFi, cable television, local magazines, complementary s’mores kit, and Scribner's Guide to the Catskill Mountains.

Amenities & Activities

The all-season hotel is situated on over 20 acres of land in the heart of  the Catskill Mountains and uniquely positioned to offer a wide range of activities. In the warmer months, adventure-seekers can partake in local hiking, fly-fishing, river tubing, and zip line tours. On the property, guests can cool off during the weekend Pool Party with a drink from The Shack, discover seasonal growth from Old Man Scribner’s Garden during a Garden BBQ, and enjoy dinner out on the scenic wrapped Prospect patio.

Fall transforms the surrounding area into a kaleidoscope of colors with crisp evenings, perfect for trying a new cider during a Meet the Maker event, roasting s’mores on the West Deck, and sipping hot chocolate in the Library. When the snow starts to fly, nearby Hunter and Windham Mountains are a short jaunt away for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, tubing, and snowshoeing. Guests will find that a lively après ski at Prospect, the outdoor sauna, and numerous fireplaces throughout the property make for a warm return. No matter the time of year, visitors can count on the Lodge being shared by revelers exchanging stories of the day’s adventures.

Dining

Scribner’s on property restaurant Prospect presents picturesque 270-degree views of the Catskill Mountains and serves a playful twist on local cuisine inspired by the rich and diverse offerings of the Hudson Valley. Executive Chef Alex Napolitano has a long history of cooking Italian cuisine, graduating from the French Culinary Institute’s Italian Culinary Program, attending classes at Alma in Italy, and working at Michelin Star restaurants such as Vicola Santa Lucia, in Cattolica, Italy and later in New York City at A Voce-Madison and Charlie Bird. Most recently, he led the Rubirosa team in New York City as Executive Chef before joining Scribner’s Catskill Lodge as Executive Chef of Prospect.

Event Spaces

Scribner’s offers numerous spaces for groups of any size to interact, entertain, and celebrate. Interior spaces include the 1,850 square foot Library connected to the West Deck, a private multi-purpose studio room, and an on-property restaurant and bar which seats 110 with an additional outdoor patio, private dining room, and Whiskey Lounge. The property’s more than 20 acres hosts an outdoor heated pool with a tiered deck for daybeds and lounge chairs, a garden for a seated dinner, cocktail reception, or ceremony, and a 4,000 square foot Bluestone Patio that can be tented to host a wedding reception for up to 175 guests.
