Singelgrachtgebouw

In Amsterdam, on either side of the Wibautstraat at the intersection with the Mauritskade, the Amstelcampus is being developed for the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA), the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Education is central to this institution, but spacious squares, well appointed public areas, student facilities, free sector housing, underground parking, shops and catering also fall into this category. The building on the Singelgracht was formerly an office building for the Raad van Arbeid (Labour Board) but the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (Social Insurance Bank) was also housed here in the past. It stands right next to the demolished Wibauthuis and is the first building on the campus to have been completed and occupied by the HvA.

In a separate part of the building, a youth centre which was formerly housed next door has also been accommodated. OIII Architecten has been involved with the redevelopment of the Singelgracht building in the capacity of interior designer. In their concept, OIII Architecten have restored the existing shell whilst letting the new functional additions such as the reception desk, the lecture hall, restaurant etc. deviate from the existing surroundings. A contemporary expression of form has been introduced without detracting from the historical character of the building. For the media-related educational institutions MiM and IAM, OIII Architecten have designed an environment which relates to the students' future workplaces such as advertising bureaus, television studios, publishers etc. in order to minimise the contrast but also to emphasise the professionalism of the institution.
