What seems like a newly-built Scandinavian-inspired wooden house is, in fact, a converted old chicken shed in the southeast of Wales. Its corrugated roof, wood paneling and concrete floors recall its former agricultural origins, but today these features are the product of high-end materials and fine workmanship. The timber housing is made of cedar, the corrugated iron sheeting is coated black and the floors have a glossy, polished finish. The interiors’ white timber walls and floor to ceiling panoramic windows create a light and airy ambience. And in addition to the view out into the lush landscape, the ceiling beams and sofa in the open plan living room add green color accents. Welsh wool blankets add a further touch of colour to the four bedrooms. The decor is a mix of Scandinavian design and bespoke pieces by two Welsh designers.
What to do? Hiking, canoeing, cycling, excursions to loval ruins, the city of Blaenavon (a World Heritage Site), Big Pit National Coal Museum. Michelin Star restaurants nearby: The White Brook, The Walnut Tree Inn.
Why we like this house? A radical transformation of an old chicken shed into to a stylish holiday home, surrounded by idyllic countryside.
