SHH Architecture & Interiors has completed the design of a new state of the art private Music Pavilion, set within the grounds of a beautiful estate in Surrey which has been crafted to deliver an unparalleled music experience ideal for an audiophile's dream. This newly constructed building exemplifies the seamless fusion of architectural innovation and outstanding acoustic performance.
The Brief
SHH's relationship with the client dates back several years, beginning with a comprehensive renovation of their Arts & Crafts residence. More recently, the client, an avid art collector with a deep passion for music, sought to create a dedicated space to enjoy music while taking in the stunning views of the landscaped grounds of the estate.
Architecture
The design sought to seamlessly integrate the new structure with the existing property through its materiality, scale, and modern reinterpretation of traditional geometry. The 150 sqm pavilion boasts a futuristic yet familiar design, thoughtfully positioned adjacent to the greenhouse. The use of Japanese charred timber and Corten steel adds rich texture and warmth to the structure, creating a striking juxtaposition with the glazed openings. The inclusion of the living wall and green roof seamlessly integrates the pavilion into its natural surroundings, fostering biodiversity and enhancing its connection to the landscape.
Flexible architectural and task lighting enhances the space without overwhelming it, bringing out contrasts and colours that make the design come alive. Natural light floods the pavilion through large glazed panes, altering the perception of the interiors throughout the day and emulating a sun clock, allowing observers to witness the passage of time.

The Music Pavilion transcended its initial purpose, evolving into a versatile space perfect for work, relaxation, and inspiration. This project reaffirmed our passion for design—crafting spaces that are both meaningful and purpose-driven”.
Interiors
Lighting adds depth to both the architecture and interior, enhancing the exterior’s visual appeal while creating focal points that highlight the client’s stunning collection of artifacts inside.
The interior design reflects the client’s aesthetic preferences and personality. It seamlessly blends functionality with artistic display, featuring meticulously crafted joinery that doubles as a showcase for the client’s art collection. Metal mesh panels are integrated into the joinery, illuminated by adjustable lights on tracks to highlight the artwork. The flooring is finished with sleek, grey micro cement, creating a minimalist yet sophisticated base. Complementing the ambiance, wall lights by Holly Hunt add a touch of elegance and enhance the overall atmosphere.
The centrepiece is a 32-piece pendant light display by Wonderglass which is suspended at varying heights, creating an artistic water ripple effect as light and shadow reflect across the floor, enhanced by the expertise of AV and lighting specialists, Ideaworks.

The extensive collection of ancient artifacts takes centre stage in the joinery, with each piece highlighted by careful lighting. The vibrant colourways are balanced by natural hues and materials, ensuring harmony throughout.”
Acoustics
The complex design had to meet stringent acoustic requirements, ensuring not only the highest quality music listening experience but also optimal sound isolation from external noise in both directions. This intricate task required collaboration with specialist acoustic designers to perfect the geometry, scale, proportions, acoustic attenuation, service buffering, and the delicate balance between acoustic absorption and transparency.

Every aspect of the pavilion has been meticulously considered, from intricate joinery, advanced integration and controls, sophisticated lighting, climate control including electric shading, ASHP energy-efficient heating, to integrated fire safety and security systems. Window shading, though not initially requested by the client, became a functional necessity due to the substantial glazing. The bespoke approach to window dressing ensures integration, aesthetic coherence, and maintainability, addressing the risk of glare and solar gain.
