Project / clients brief:

Rather than emerging from a conventional client-led brief, the Whispering Tree Spa was conceived directly from its setting. Tucked within an untouched pocket of mature indigenous trees in on the site, the spa was imagined as a sanctuary shaped by its surroundings. The objective was to create a wellness retreat that offered guests deep sensory immersion; where the design would heighten, rather than interrupt, the quiet majesty of the land.

Concept:

In a place already drenched in stillness, where nature orchestrates its own rhythm, the role of the designer is not to create serenity, but to frame it. The Whispering Tree Spa challenges the typical notion of wellness architecture. Here, there is no curated playlist, no artificially scented air. Instead, guests arrive to the rustle of trees, birdsong echoing through the canopy, and the gentle hush of flowing water. These are the sounds of wellness here - real, grounding, alive.

The design honours this idea with a raw, open, and elemental approach: allowing the wilderness in, and letting the architecture recede. The spa offers a poetic counterpoint to the traditional safari experience—one of stillness, softness, and self-connection.

Various design elements:

At the heart of the spa is a circular welcome and retail pod, its form echoing the organic shapes of the landscape. From here, the architecture unfolds lightly—canvas-covered treatment rooms that open entirely with roll-up panels, erasing the line between interior and exterior. A floating deck with a plunge pool invites guests to recline under dappled sunlight, surrounded by nothing but trees.

A couple’s treatment suite features a handmade travertine bathtub by StoneArt Kenya, positioned to offer private views deep into the forest. Custom-designed solid wood furniture, developed in collaboration with Nairobi Timber Joinery, incorporates tree pits to preserve and celebrate the existing vegetation—letting nature pierce through the floorplate.

About the execution:

Executed with extreme sensitivity, the spa was designed to touch the land lightly. Carved carefully around the existing tree canopy and elevated on stilts, it ensures minimal impact on the ecosystem below. The project was brought to life through close collaboration with Highmark Construction and Nairobi Timber Joinery, both Kenyan-based teams with a shared commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability.

About the ambience:

This is a spa designed not for escape, but for reconnection. Guests are enveloped in a living soundscape—the calls of nearby wildlife, the hush of wind, the murmur of water. The experience is immersive and almost spiritual, not in ornament but in presence.

Challenges overcome:

One of the most significant challenges was preserving the open, immersive nature of the design while maintaining guest privacy during treatments. The solution was a series of sheer drapery panels and large concrete planters that provide subtle screening while still allowing light, air, and nature to move freely through the space.

Unique / key features:

• Open-Air Immersion: Treatment rooms that fully open to the forest without disrupting privacy.
• Natural Acoustics: No artificial music—only the sound of the wild.
• Handmade Luxury: Travertine tub carved in Kenya; custom timber joinery throughout.
• Biophilic Integration: Trees retained within the design footprint, grounding the space in its native ecology.
• Elevated Construction: The entire structure hovers above the forest floor to preserve root systems and wildlife movement.

Furniture chosen:

Every furniture piece was custom-crafted locally by Nairobi Timber Joinery to reflect the language of the land. With natural materials, soft curves, and minimal embellishment, the pieces feel grown rather than made—designed to blend, not impose.
