The design of this gymnasium at Torshavn is simple in concept, flexible in use and also very attractive. Architects BBP Arkitekter won the design and build competition together with turnkey contractor MT Hojgaard. The gymnasium is sited at the short end of a football field and forms a major addition to the existing Torshavn Municipal stadium. The long low rectangular building has two entrances marked by glass towers which provide access. The gym itself lies below ground while the changing rooms, meeting rooms, technical facilities and social areas are positioned along the facade allowing daylight to filter into the gym area. On the upper floor balcony there is an uninterrupted view of the entire gymnasium together with a cafe. External access at one end means that the roof can also double as a musical stage. At night, the transparency of the building, a combination of clear and frosted glass, enhances the activities within and illuminates the vibrant colours used within to create a very stimulating environment. The architects were particularly concerned to avoid the traditional image of gymnasia which are often echoing, cold and not particularly user-friendly places. Instead they opted for a warm, welcoming and inviting design where both users and spectators could enjoy the activities and social interaction. To achieve this, particularly to eliminate the sounds of play, bouncing balls and distracting noise, carefully considered acoustic design has played an large and important part. This is why the architects opted to specify Troldekt acoustic ceilings throughout. One wall of the gymnasium also features a single row of Troldtekt panels in various shades of red which were spray-painted in situ. To improve the overall design, instead of traditional old-fashioned suspended light fittings, a clean unbroken surface has been created by integrating within the ceiling transverse Troldtekt lighting strips in the gymnasium and circular ones over the corridors. The whole complex admirably complements the architecture and character of Torshavn with its colourful houses.
