UPTOHOME is a diffuse housing facility that offers temporary housing in the eastern part of Milan.
The theme of temporariness is a direct consequence of profound social and cultural changes: job mobility, moving for study reasons, instability of the family structure are all factors that are strongly changing our daily experience and the articulation of the basic patterns of living.
DAP studio has been working on this issue for many years, conducting research on the design of minimal living space and the home as a “base” rather than a classical living place.
Designing minimal spaces means working on essentiality, optimizing every available surface and minimizing superfluous elements. This process of subtraction does not imply a loss of quality, but on the contrary aims to maximize the efficiency of rooms, ensuring maximum use of space through innovative and versatile solutions. The most effective design strategies include the integration of living and sleeping areas, the use of multifunctional furniture, and the definition of fluid pathways that make the space dynamic and adaptable.
A key aspect is the modulation of privacy, achieved through spatial devices that separate without closing. Central volumes that house service rooms, multifunctional furniture-hinges, wall-filters with varying degrees of transparency, and pass-through kitchens that connect different rooms are some of the solutions adopted to ensure spatial continuity without compromising functionality.
An in-depth study is then conducted for each project with regard to materials, shapes and colors in order to achieve a fresh and recognizable image with a low budget.
