A renewed identity for an existing school building
Comenius College is housed in a building dating from the late 1960s, designed by architects E.F. Falkenburg and J.H. Mulders. Inspired by Brutalism and Structuralism, the original architecture was increasingly perceived as rigid and distant from contemporary educational needs. Studio id+ was commissioned to reconnect the building with the school's educational vision and the everyday experiences of its students. The transformation included the entrance, the school grounds and the central hall.
A welcoming and recognisable entrance
A new canopy gives the school a distinctive and welcoming entrance. Its design bridges the rigid architecture of the 1960s with the dynamics of contemporary education. Angled lines, rotated volumes and rounded forms create an inviting architectural gesture. The canopy connects to the existing façade columns and opens towards its surroundings.
The outdoor area was also enhanced with new places to sit and gather. Existing concrete blocks were fitted with wooden seating elements, encouraging informal encounters during breaks. The combination of steel frames and timber establishes a consistent design language that continues into the interior.
From circulation space to social environment
Originally, the central hall primarily served as a circulation space. Through a series of carefully considered interventions, it has been transformed into an environment where students can move, meet, relax and study.
A new centrally positioned reception desk creates a recognisable point of arrival and improves circulation throughout the hall. Previously unused alcoves have been transformed into seating areas, while a former classroom has been incorporated into the hall as a student lounge. A variety of seating and study arrangements allows students to choose between individual work, collaboration and relaxation.
The stairwells were also redesigned, each receiving its own colour palette and graphic identity, making them recognisable landmarks within the building. An exhibition wall presents the history of Comenius College, connecting its architectural heritage with the recent transformations.

Together, these architectural and interior interventions strengthen the identity of Comenius College. While respecting the existing architecture, new spaces and elements have been introduced that respond to the daily activities and needs of students.
The result is a school environment that goes beyond functionality, encouraging interaction, individual choice and a stronger sense of belonging.
