House Awasi is located on the picturesque island of Lombok, Indonesia, where the island’s rich cultural heritage adds depth to its natural beauty. As the home of the Sasak people, Lombok showcases a unique blend of traditions, customs, and arts. From intricate weaving and woodcarving to traditional dances and music, the island’s cultural tapestry is as vibrant as its breathtaking landscapes.

The clients, a Belgian couple in their mid-fifties with a background in real estate and financial investments, chose to build their dream vacation home on Lombok. After spending a lifetime in Europe, they desired a retreat where they could escape the cold half of the year. With their experience in real estate, they had a clear vision for their home, understanding the design process well and easily collaborating on ideas.

Social gatherings are central to their lifestyle, and they enjoy hosting parties, playing pétanque, and organizing barbecues. The design process focused heavily on the flow of social spaces, ensuring seamless connections between living areas. Careful selection of durable, quality furniture was also essential to provide a welcoming and lasting experience.

House Awasi draws inspiration from the earthy tones of the surrounding landscape, harmonizing with nature through the use of local stone, warm hues, and timber screens that soften the building's edges. Each detail was crafted by specialized artisans, with ulin wood used to construct the pergolas, sun screens, and ceilings. The handmade screens throughout the house echo the name “Awasi,” a place in Patagonia where the family shared memorable moments.

Incorporating local materials with warm tones, the house blends into the landscape, contrasted by the sharp, straight lines of the roof that add a striking architectural element. House Awasi is a true testament to craftsmanship and design, seamlessly integrating with Lombok’s natural and cultural landscape.
