In 1995 the Vroom and Dreesmann department store decided to radically change the existing store in Rotterdam. An extra floor housing the restaurant and a curtain wall were added connecting the entrance to the new Beurstraverse, a semi underground shopping mall. The traditional department store formula was extended with the introduction of various franchises within the walls of the building, thereby creating a shopping center environment. The extra floor with its saucer-shaped copper roof has become a landmark in the city.
