The client purchased the outermost lot among the lots for sale within the townhouse. One reason is that the lot is sloping, unlike other flat lots, making it possible to enter the basement of the building from the road naturally. Secondly, the client thought that a tranquil life would be guaranteed since the lot is at the end of the complex.

The client had specific tastes and preferences. He preferred an achromatic material tone and geometric compositions. He also loved even the trivial, deliberate, and accurate lines, and appreciated the relaxation provided by white color and blank spaces. Above all, the client understood the richness of emptiness rather than filling.

Functionally, one space that the client wanted most was a playground in the basement. He was enthusiastic about movies and wanted a private cinema where he could enjoy movies in high quality with total concentration. The client was also passionate about cars. He had the skill to satisfy that interest and the intelligence to carry it out. So he needed an ample working space to fulfill his curiosity. Therefore, he wanted to enlarge the underground parking lot and create a playground for his various hobbies.

The design process was pleasant and proceeded with little disagreement. It was fun because the architect and the client had similar tastes. The purest geometric form, the hexahedron, was combined and applied to the overall composition of the exterior of the building. According to the construction plan, the building had two stories above the ground. However, it became a mass structure of three or four floors since all the floors from the basement to the second floor were exposed. As a result, the overall shape of the building has become more abundant.

To fill the outer form using gray-toned colors only, we chose granite stone for the materials of building walls. It is achromatic but has various tones and brightness levels and can express different images through surface textures. In order of dark to light colors, Macheon, Goheung, and Geochang stones were used and various surface treatments were applied  such as dabbed finish, horizontal and vertical line finishes, and flamed finish. These materials were then applied to the hexahedral units that comprised the entire building, creating a stable, attractive, and harmonious form. When natural or artificial light is illuminated, the various textures of the stones enrich the elevation through curves and shadows on the surface.

The interior of the building was designed to be most simple and neat. White colors and wood were used for warmth and gentleness, and metal plates with non-physical images were added to prevent the space from looking dull. Furthermore, for elements such as bar sinks, which should exist as objects in the inner space, we used granite, which was utilized as the exterior material, to give a sense of completeness from the outside to the inside.  

The construction process of this project went through a tough time due to the constructor. In this process, the client’s consideration and faith gave us the courage to resolve the issues and complete this project. We sincerely hope that the client will enjoy a prosperous and tranquil future in this beautiful building.
