ORE Design + Technology as Architects

ORE will be constructing a series of three multi-generational homes sited at the edge of a gentle swale. ORE’s first ground-up project is sited adjacent to the idyllic Peconic Land Trust in Southampton. At roughly 8,500 sf, the central home replaces an existing structure and frames a number of views unique to the surrounding landscape. Each wing of the house will serve various functions focusing on entertainment and retreat. Working with the clients to understand their unique and long-term intentions, wine tasting, dining and gallery spaces are distributed throughout inviting visitors to explore and enjoy all areas of the home and the landscape.

A vineyard will be planted over the majority of the site. Immediately upon arrival, the rhythm of the planted vine rows will heighten the dramatic design of the buildings on site. Tucked within the grapevines, a small 1,000 sf vineyard cottage will offer a retreat for the clients’ parents. The cottage is conceptualized as a glass box veiled beneath a gabled canopy. It shares a number of material characteristics similar to the main house, including the charred wood – shou-sugi-ban – facade.

A combination of pool house, agricultural building, personal gym, and garage will round out the collection of buildings. At roughly 2,500 sf, the pool house serves a variety of useful programmatic functions from gardening to lounging, exercising to storage. A lounge will open on to an elegant plaza with space to enjoy the Southampton summers by the pool with guests and family.

In many ways, the design offers a modern interpretation of vernacular building typologies. The gabled roof form references the old salt-box construction of homes typical to the Northeast. The clean, black cladding adds a commanding presence to the buildings on site. Landscape elements will incorporate native species and serve as screens from unwanted sights and sounds, and link this cluster of interior spaces out to the surrounding landscape.
