SOMOS AGUA / WE ARE WATER

Héctor Navarro Architects as Architects

Curated & designed:

Manuel Blanco & Héctor Navarro

'SOMOS AGUA' is spatially organized in 12 sections, crossed by the course of a river, which address concepts ranging from the role of rivers as shapers of cultural and natural landscapes, the richness of the different ecosystems, the relationship between water and energy or their physical and chemical properties, to everyday issues for the citizen as the bringing of water to the city, its consumption in homes and industry, or the explanation of the concept of water footprint, also taken to our daily activities. Some of the most important sections are dedicated to the different solutions for mitigating and adapting to climate change that are being developed in relation to sustainable water management.

'SOMOS AGUA' presents a montage in which the visitor is immersed in a journey with powerful images, shocking audiovisuals and a sound map made up of waterfalls, rainfall and all kinds of moving water. The tour is articulated through large audiovisual installations such as the projections of rain on a sheet of water at the entrance, the projection of the great waterfalls of the world, the virtual image of a female human body showing the network of veins and arteries of our body making visible the title of the exhibition 'WE ARE WATER', the projection of the deep sea of 35 meters long and 6 meters high or inside a LED tunnel simulating an immersion in the seabed with audiovisuals on all sides contemplating a digital recreation of its fauna and flora.

Other large installations consist of an Earth globe of 340 cm in diameter with which, at a volumetric level, the volumes of the planet are compared with the existing water in it, with fresh water and with the water available for consumption. Other digital installations show a fragment taken from a tropical river with hippopotamus and crocodiles, or a triptych showing which gestures in the bathroom can lead to important savings.

A space is dedicated to water in Madrid with a triple mapping operation; a print on the floor of the map of the city, a projection showing a Google Earth flight from the location of the exhibition in Plaza de Castilla to the north of the Community showing the most important facilities and a map of the territory with all its facilities.

The exhibition is conceived as a set of images, static and dynamic, floating in layers in space. The type of support used is a metallic structure modulated in 80x80cm that adapts to the needs of each case. Its repetition makes it disappear, thus prioritizing only the content. The backs and sides of the screens, as well as the wiring and counterweights are left visible as a background plane. 84 videos produced by Fundacion Canal for this exhibition didactically complete the exhibition discourse.
