Woolwich Town Centre

The next stage of the Woolwich Town Centre masterplan is now on site — delivering 557 new homes (38% affordable) plus a brand new community square and green space for the area to enjoy. As Leader of the Council Anthony Okereke has said, the leisure centre is just one part of a bigger regeneration story for Woolwich — one that also includes the Tramshed Theatre refurbishment and the new homes, shops and public spaces still to come. It all ties into his wider ambition to deliver more housing in Greenwich through the Greenwich Builds Programme.

CGL led the masterplan for a new mixed-use neighbourhood in Woolwich, bringing together homes, leisure, culture, performance and public space to create a new community and cultural heart for the town centre.

Designed by FaulknerBrown Architects, the new leisure centre faces General Gordon Square and connects to the refurbished Tramshed Theatre. Together, these buildings establish a prominent civic destination, with leisure, cultural and community uses brought together around a new public realm.

Working with Hill and Clarion, CGL is continuing through the technical design stages for the new homes and community square. Designed to support outdoor performances by the Tramshed, the square will provide a flexible setting for events and everyday community life.

The project demonstrates CGL’s strength in creating places where different uses, communities and activities can coexist. Our masterplanning approach considers not only individual buildings, but how buildings, streets and public spaces are curated to create a layered and connected urban environment.

By combining a diverse mix of uses with well-designed public spaces, the masterplan provides a framework for a place that can evolve and remain relevant over time. Our role is to create the conditions for a successful neighbourhood to develop beyond the completion of the buildings themselves, supporting the long-term life and identity of Woolwich town centre.
