Work.able Manila: A Contemporary Workplace Within a Legacy Setting

Work.able’s new centre in Makati City, designed and built by Space Matrix, transforms 9,000 square feet within Robinsons Summit Center into a contemporary workplace, balancing a high-density commercial brief with an ambition to create a workplace that feels premium, welcoming, and connected to its Filipino roots.

The design concept, “A New Pulse Within Timeless Walls,” responds directly to the character of the existing building. Rather than treating the legacy setting as a limitation, the design introduces a new layer of energy and identity while retaining a sense of continuity with its surroundings.

Planning was central to achieving this balance. The existing building geometry informed the placement of workstations, private offices, meeting spaces, and shared amenities, allowing the available floor area to be used efficiently while maintaining clear circulation and visual openness.

The work café forms the social centre of the workplace. Positioned as a shared destination, it encourages informal interaction and community while providing a visual and spatial anchor for the floor.

Materiality plays an important role in creating a sense of warmth and quality. The arrival sequence incorporates subtle references to traditional Filipino architecture, while contemporary finishes and carefully selected colours establish a fresh identity for the Work.able brand. Accents inspired by the Philippine flag introduce local character throughout the workplace.

Greenery and open sightlines help create visual relief within the high-density plan, allowing the space to feel more expansive than its footprint suggests. Flexible office configurations and demountable partitions further support long-term adaptability, allowing the workplace to evolve alongside changing tenant requirements.

The result is a workplace that demonstrates how an existing commercial building can support a new generation of flexible work. Every square foot is carefully considered, but efficiency never becomes the visual or experiential focus.

Instead, the project creates a sense of place through materiality, community, local identity, and flexibility. It gives Work.able a new centre that feels both rooted in its setting and ready for what comes next.
