The Dedaun Boutique Bungalows are a prime example of how nature is seamlessly integrated into urban structures - termed 'ecocentric' design. Specifically, the concept of leaves as shelter was the prime source of inspiration, "daun" meaning leaf in malay, evolving from the existing verdure surrounding the plot. This greatly impacted the form of the building, as seen in the roof shaped in the form of large leaves.
This ecological element was also developed due to the awareness of how natural habitats have been destroyed to make way for modernization, and these bungalows almost serve as a means to give back to the earth, mimicking the lush flora that nature has given and that we have ruined.
The fluidity of internal and external spaces wherein the internal was designed to be merged with its lush green surroundings allows for interaction between the two as well as for natural circulation and ambient light. The utilization of organic materials such as wood, stone and even water as design elements also call to mind the natural world that the plot is surrounded by, and is an inherent part of.
