Yunxi Omotesando occupies a modest four-storey building on a backstreet near Tokyo’s Omotesando. Beyond the tree-lined avenue, shops, restaurants and homes share a more intimate urban scale. The bustle of the main street carries into the neighbourhood during the day; as evening falls, the streets become quieter and the rhythms of everyday life come into view.
A3 VISION approached the renovation by working with the existing building. Its white tiled exterior remains part of the varied streetscape, while exposed beams, simple materials and natural light retain a sense of the original interior. The aim was to create a place with the familiarity of a private home, where visitors could settle into the neighbourhood.
The ground floor accommodates pop-up stores and occasional events. On the second floor, a shared living room sits alongside a suite with two bedrooms and its own living room. The third and fourth floors each contain three guest rooms. Shared worktops near the lift on these upper floors support small daily routines.
A 1920s English table anchors the communal space, offering a place to sit, read, share a meal or talk. Furniture, lamps, ceramics and pictures were selected in person, allowing objects from different periods and places to find their place in daily use. Apart from the bespoke beds and sofas, the furnishings were sourced locally rather than conceived as a uniform collection.
In the guest rooms, timber furniture, soft curtains and restrained finishes allow daylight to shape the atmosphere. The retained structure remains visible, while the changing light connects the interiors to the surrounding city. Older objects bring traces of other lives into the rooms, adding a sense of time without prescribing a single decorative style.
Yunxi Omotesando brings together the existing building, collected objects and ordinary rituals of living. It offers a way of staying in Tokyo that is rooted in the experience of its backstreets, with space for guests to establish a daily rhythm of their own.
