Located in Trancoso, a tranquil seaside town in Brazil’s Bahia province, Vista House by studio mk27 is a 8,343 square foot home that sits atop a 46-metre-high cliff. The design is strongly influenced by the proximity of the ocean and the colours and textures of the tropical environment and features wide openings that frame views of the surrounding landscape ‘like a wide-angle camera.’

The home’s overall dimensions are roughly 15-metres in width, 3.5 metres in height and an impressive 60 metres in length. Covered by a low-gabled roof, the building volume is enclosed at either where the kitchen and main bedroom are respectively located. The other two longitudinal facades open up generously to the landscape.

The roof is finished with hand-carved wooden shingles while the building facade is clad with eucalyptus sections and Viroc, a wood-and-cement composite panel.

The use of the perforated Viroc and the spindly eucalyptus sections create interesting shadow patterns throughout the home, while the expansive overhanging roof ensures that the residents can enjoy the outdoors in any weather condition.

In addition to the primary bedroom, the home has four additional bedrooms contained within a smaller volume that is inset from the exterior walls. Independent of the main structure, this inner house can open itself completely as the Viroc panels function as folding screens.

Throughout, the architects chose a restrained palette of creamy tones and wood for the interior walls and furniture. These polished interiors contrast the softer, organic look of the exterior.
