An organic bakery crafted for the father and son duo by Bancaù Architectes, L’Artisan des Pains Oubliés is a reflection of the owners’ and designers’ ethos of organic authenticity, whether it is in food or architecture.

Located in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, the interiors highlight local craftsmanship and materiality. Displaying a muted and dusky palette of terracotta, wood and raw earth plaster, the neutral colours instil a feeling of lightness and raw sensuality.

A contemporary take on traditional crafts and techniques, the design seeks to reintroduce forgotten arts and skills in an effective medium. The bakery comprises retail and dining space against a backdrop of baking tools featured around the earth oven.

Bespoke, custom-made furniture enhances the natural aesthetic while creating a visual dialogue with the design elements. Terracotta bricks form the floor and wrap the large circular oven. The bricks accentuate the subdued earth plaster covering the lower half of the walls in a Flemish bond.

Simple yet elegant, the raw, monochrome bakery beautifully honours the art of bread-making.
