The Renaissance of Vernazza

Cinque Terre's Comeback: How Vernazza Rebuilt ItselfWhen a biblical storm rolled across the Cinque Terre, northwest Italy’s string of five historic coastal villages (Porotfino, Monteroso, Vernazza, Corniglia, and Riomaggiore), last October, the floods carried fishing boats all the way to Morocco—and almost wiped the prettiest village, Vernazza, off the map. Pritzker Prize–winning British architect Richard Rogers, who has vacationed in the town for more than 50 years, is spearheading (with Italian architect Ernesto Bartolini and Roberto Castellani) a master plan for the public areas that is funded by nonprofit organizations such as Save Vernazza. The Rogers' Plan for the Reconstruction and Requalification of Vernazza has... Mais

Rathauspassage · city passage

The Rathauspassage Paderborn is the result of an initiative by private builders. By converting the old company buildings of the F. Schöningh publishing house, a sequence of new urban spaces has been created, connecting Rosenstraße with Jühenplatz and Rathausplatz. The ground floor zones were completely redesigned for small-scale retail trade and enriched with gastronomic and cultural uses. The upper floors are reserved for offices, surgeries and apartments. The interventions of gutting, renovation and supplementary new buildings have created a lively mix with an unmistakable character. The passages, courtyards and alleys were designed in connection with the old network of paths in Paderborn's city centre. Mais

International African American Museum

New York, United States, 2020-01-21 - On the waterfront site that was the port of arrival for nearly half of all enslaved Africans brought to North America in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a long-anticipated museum dedicated to telling their stories and celebrating the contributions of their descendants has at last broken ground. Proposed in 2000 by Charleston’s longtime mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., the International African American Museum (IAAM), designed by New York–based architectural firm Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, is now under way. Moody Nolan, the largest African-American-owned design firm in the United States, is architect of record.  The museum is rising on what was once Gadsden’s Wharf, built b... Mais

Ocean Van Minh

Ocean Van Minh eco city is D&P's submission for a competition. Like every modern city, it has all the facilities needed for modern life such as: nurseries, education facilities, hospitals, etc. What makes Ocean Van Minh different from the rest is the fact that its architecture is blessed with such strong force of greenery. A public center such as: education center, park, etc. is used as a joint for residential areas. This connects people and gives them a great sense of community. Of course, a healthy living environment cannot do without greenery.Greenery and water are the main theme of the city. The use of plants and ‘water paths’ make Ocean Van Minh’s design consistent yet diversified. Our team’s idea was a design that looks like... Mais

CITYLIFT

What to do with Cape Town’s incomplete Foreshore Freeway Bridge is an issue that has puzzled the city (and its citizens) for decades: to complete or demolish, and how to develop a solution that will create long-term value for the surrounding precinct and the city in general. To answer this conundrum dhk, in a 10-company partnership including Urban-Think Tank, developed CITYLIFT - an innovative master plan that proposes dropping Cape Town’s elevated freeways to the ground and lifting the city over them. This scheme would expand the CBD and provide a new neighbourhood stretching 1 kilometre along the harbour’s edge. CITYLIFT was one of six shortlisted bids in a competition initiated by the City of Cape Town[1]. The brief... Mais
