Embodied carbon

Efficient

For embodied carbon, LCA/LCC tools were used to evaluate structural systems and materials. To reduce the project’s carbon footprint, local materials were prioritised.

Petersen Tegl’s handmade Kolumba™ brick and handmade Cover™ tile were used for the Performing Arts Centre. A custom colour was specified, which is close to K91 and C91.

Operational Emissions / Energy

IES software was used to calculate carbon emissions. The project team aimed to balance operational and embodied carbon.

For operational carbon, a passive energy approach minimises energy demand and links the building to campus-wide energy systems.

Passive energy approach

  • The Performing Arts Centre is designed with a passive energy strategy, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling.
  • The building is partially set into the ground, helping to stabilise indoor temperatures.
  • The nearly closed facades on the building’s south and west sides prevent overheating. Openings on the north and east facades, facing the sports fields, keep the building outward-looking and connected to the site.
  • A curving brick veil forms a dramatic “daylight canyon”, bringing natural light deep into the building and enabling natural ventilation.
  • Large picture-frame windows in all studios and classrooms showcase activity inside and ensure abundant daylight.
  • Residual heating is provided by a shared system beneath the sports grounds. This is complemented by the use of rooftop solar panels.

A holistic approach to sustainability ensures that the building is a functional asset and an example of environmental responsibility in an educational setting.
