Designed for a compact urban site, this sculptural alteration challenges expectations of light and volume. In plan, a corner of the home was carefully opened to extend into a new deck space, sheltered by a transparent roof—creating a softer, more diffused threshold between indoors and out. For our clients, both working in TV and film, we explored ways to apply deeper, moodier hues within new sculptural volumes. The result is an almost cinematic effect—attuned to the dramatic interplay of black and white. The Working Wall Stone, dark cabinetry, warm timber and integrated planting form one continuous composition. Focused lighting illuminates the working surfaces while the architecture remains calm and restrained.

MXN K‑HAUS — The Kitchen, Reconsidered Hidden architecture. Living ingredients. A bespoke kitchen shaped around the way its owner cooks, combining sculptural timber, integrated planting and an uncompromising architectural palette.

Ten Centimetres of Solid Ash A substantial live-edge ash end gives the island its sculptural identity. The natural edge is contrasted with a precisely detailed black ribbed base and deep Woodland Fern cabinetry.

A Ceiling That Lives Planted sections are arranged among 144 individual ceiling lights, creating an illuminated landscape overhead. Nature is integrated into the architecture rather than added afterwards as decoration.

Woodland Fern Full-height doors in deep Woodland Fern create a bold architectural wall while concealing practical kitchen storage. Their simple geometry allows the colour and surrounding materials to take precedence.

The Kitchen, Reconsidered

K·haus by MXN Design is a one-off bespoke kitchen in the Ribble Valley, created around the way its owners actually live, prepare food and entertain. Hidden architecture, living ingredients and expressive natural materials replace the conventional fitted-kitchen formula.
