Sitting on a narrow lot where the maximum width of a new build could only be 24 feet, we had our work cut out for us with the Stacey-Turley Residence. In addition, zoning regulations allowed no side windows, so an additional challenge was maximizing light. Add to this the fact that the young doctor and literature professor with 2 young children wished to remain in the home for upwards of a half-century, and we knew we had to get it right. At the express request of the client, a multipurpose space is conceived with the capacity to grow together or be divided into different environments depending on the needs. The design started from the repetition of the same concrete basic geometric figure, independent by itself, massive, almost cubical that housed each one of the activities. It is placed or stacked according to an ordering based on the program. These prisms, through, are conceived heavy, in concrete, emphasizing the inalterability of natural routes, caves or cavities, which surprise by ending in unexpected places, in this case in a terraced square. Archilovers Best Project winner. Casa dos Abraços is situated in the fishing village of Ferragudo, Algarve, Southern Portugal.  The historic centre of Ferragudo is an extremely sensitive area to work and we believe that our intervention should be balanced harmonious and above all integrated with the surrounding architecture. The plot is embraced by an alley. The studio decided to explore the concept following this movement.  The exterior walls of the building follow the irregular shape of the alley as a consequence of the embracing gesture.  The interiors reflect this movement which is enhanced by the strategic positioning of the staircase achieving fluidity and openness throughout the building.
