Jiangxin Island, a beacon of maritime trade for over a thousand years, is also the birthplace of more than 800 Chinese poems. Flexible mould technology & precision engineered hempcrete bricks forms the structure of this Hempcrete coiled wall.  Four meter high glass windows weave between the forms 12 arches opening out onto a 360 degrees terraced area. A twisting spiral staircase becomes the sculptural centre piece which leads you up onto the roof terrace. The top of the coiled wall forms a natural barrier to the perimeter of this roof terrace without interfering with the view from this space. The old mill building dates back to 1914 and has been adapted several times before. It is located at the transition from meadow to forest in a ditch next to a stream. The existing building was not sufficiently lit and the connection to the surroundings was not established. The Distillery of Modern Art started as a warehouse, and Vickers Design Group converted it into a distillery, tasting room, art gallery, and event space. Jason Buch Photography Copper is used to accent the space and unite the different areas of the building. The distillery portion is a square rotated 45 degrees, so it breaks the grid and becomes a feature element no matter where you stand in the tasting bar or event space. Nineteen years after opening their first exhibition space, in New York City on Broadway along the edge of Tribeca, Canada gallery relocated their most recent Lower Eastside operation to 60 Lispenard Street. The new gallery address in Tribeca is integral to a renewed Soho/Tribeca gallery scene.   Canada Gallery presents a dignified context for art, but with a humane interface for the audience.
