Immersed inside the low jungle of Puerto Escondido, between Nim trees, Casa OHANA finds its footprint to settle. A sinuous path unfolds through dense, tall vegetation, interrupted by a monolithic planting of Mesquite and Plumbago, revealing for the first time a large structure with a floating roof and shade. The fierce crashing of waves against the sand, tearing it apart, makes the house vibrate and splattered with tar. The house gives the illusion of a ship navigating high winds and seas. The project’s starting point was its integration with the natural area of the Colares pine forest. This project is located by the sea, but its story begins with the search for the land, for freshness to the touch, for the feeling of being all connected, for the search for natural light and the way it would permeate the space. Beginning with the stairs made of limestone which predominates in the area and which direct our view towards a weeping wall which with its curvature insinuates a turn to the left. Positioned at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac and overlooking the ocean at North Curl Curl, the owners purchased the home to be able to see and hear the ocean. However, the outdated house did not capitalise on the spectacular views, the flow and symmetry were awkward, with areas of dead and underutilised space. The owners, who were temporarily based overseas, came to Archisoul looking for a major renovation of the home to make it beautiful as well as functional and to take full advantage of the stunning views. For the architect Alvaro Rojas Vio, the construction of Kubo was an opportunity to deepen his commitment to the environmental development of the seaside town of Tongoy, proposing an urban element that could deliver aesthetic value to the town. This project had to address four challenges: a small plot of land, of only 400 square meters; to provide the clients with a spectacular view of the sea in spite of tall buildings nearby; a south-facing orientation, which required a strategy to provide light and heat; and to respond to a limited budget.
