In Lelystad, a detached house for a retired couple was renovated and provided with an extension on ground level, making the house suitable for lifelong living. The existing garage was made somewhat smaller; it now houses a bathroom and a built-in wardrobe. The extension houses the new bedroom, which is virtually freestanding in the garden. Historically, the area was occupied by the city walls and one of the access gates to the city: Porta San Biagio.Following its demolition in 1845, the walls and moat left room for residential blocks that, following its path, inhabit its thickness. Richly appointed, our client’s condo on Nicollet Island presented the opportunity to create an atmosphere, spaces to display their art collection and a highly detailed primary suite.  JMAD JMAD JMAD JMAD Architect James McNeal started with the stair railing that connects the upper floor to the suite. The suite was tight on space, so we wanted to use details that would open up the space without eliminating any. Since the tub takes up so much space, we decided to make the tub an art and water feature - with a hand-carved dragon serving at the helm. Drawing inspiration from the coastal colours and textures of the Mornington Peninsula, we sprinkled our magic over every inch of the house with new materials, textured furnishings, a new kitchen and bathrooms to create a light, warm and layered contemporary home.
