Rootstudio sets a dialogue between gastronomy and heritage in this cultural centre in Oaxaca, Mexico
In the historic centre of Oaxaca, Mexico, Rootstudio, a Mexico-based architectural laboratory, restores a former viceregal convent of Carmen Alto into a multipurpose gastronomic centre. The heritage recovery project layers the past, present and future of the Oaxacan gastronomic culture to create a contemporary yet timeless educational space.

Antonio Raso + Alejandro B. Galán + César Egea restore the historic Torre de la Cabrilla Watchtower
Located at a geo-strategic site with views of the area, royal road and streams of La Vega, Guadalbaida, and the fords by the Guadazuheros, Torre de Cbrilla is a historic watchtower formerly built for security purposes. The restoration project by Antonio Raso, Alejandro B. Galán and César Egea seek to revive the tower through minimal interventions and landscaping.

The structure comprises two floors and a terrace based on a practical square plan of 6.7x7.32m. Masonry and stone slabs form the loadbearing structure with buttresses of rope and blight ashlars. Additionally, all four sides showcase cruciform engravings.

Reconstruction of history
They do not always build offices in new modern administrative buildings with doubled floor and modular layout system. Sometimes, the company decides to stay in their long-term headquarters and renovate it. Even if it has some bad predisposition and restrictions, but also it’s own Genium loci and history. This was the case of the Trade Fides technological company, which is a specialist on safety systems and IT technology. It has been based in the wider center of Brno, which transforms into a modern administrative city center. They decided to insert modern offices into the existing building.

Polyphonic Apartment meshes modern with vintage in a home concept that doubles as furniture showcase
In Surat Gujarat, India, the Polyphonic Apartment is a renovated apartment and home for a purveyor of furniture sourced from the international market, Europe in particular. The client wanted an environment that could serve as a showcase of selected furniture pieces but also move beyond the concept of showcase to comfortably accommodate his young family of four.

The existing apartment was sizable but not spacious in feeling. As such, walls were taken down and rooms merged during the redesign process, which was undertaken by Openideas Architects. Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum incorporates ancient kiln tectonics and materials
Known as the ‘Porcelain Capital of the World,’ Jingdezhen (China) has been producing pottery for 1,700 years. Historically a major exporter of porcelain to Europe, Jingdezhen developed around kiln complexes which included the kiln as well as workshops and houses. Furthermore, the city’s street pattern was generated by the nature of the industry, with the main streets running in a north-south orientation towards the Chang River, which served as the major point of transportation.
