Moses Bridge

The West Brabant Water Line is a defence-line consisting of a series of fortresses and cities with inundation areas in the south-west of the Netherlands. It dates from the 17th century but fell into disrepair in the 19th century. When the water line was finally restored, an access bridge across the the moat of one of the fortresses, Fort de Roovere, was needed. This fort now has a new, recreational function and lies on several routes for cycling and hiking. It is, of course, highly improper to build bridges across the moats of defence works, especially on the side of the fortress the enemy was expected to appear on. That's why we designed an invisible bridge. Its construction is entirely made of wood, waterproofed with EPDM foil. The br... More

Rolling Bridge

The studio was commissioned to design a pedestrian bridge to span an inlet of the Grand Union Canal at Paddington Basin, London, and provide an access route for workers and residents. Crucially, the bridge needed to open to allow access for the boat moored in the inlet. The aim was to make the movement the extraordinary aspect of the bridge. A common approach to designing opening bridges is to have a single rigid element that fractures and lifts out of the way. Rolling Bridge opens by slowly and smoothly curling until it transforms from a conventional, straight bridge, into a circular sculpture which sits on the bank of the canal. The structure opens using a series of hydraulic rams integrated into the balustrade. As it curls, each of... More

Sava footbridge

IN THE REFLECTION OF THE STARS The bridge built over the Sava canyon at Bled is intended for hikers - so that hikers can stop for a moment, experience new views, become aware of nature, breathe with the water, glance at the reflection of the moving stars at night and hear the river murmuring. It is a bridgewhere the world stops for a moment. A slight inclination, not easily perceptible, a shift in the axis of motion, a subtle backward surge - its motion being checked by the ends of the bridge on each side - and in an audacious trajectory the bridgeleaps from one bank to another. Schanerloch Bridge

Thoughts - Schanerloch Bridge The bridge through the Schanerloch gorge is part of the impressive road from the city of Dornbirn to the hamlet of Ebnit which picturesquely situated by the well of the river Dornbirner Ache at the foot of scenic mountains. The spectacular route to this ancient settlement area is characterized by a series of natural rock tunnels and stone bridges. Originating from the well known typology of the stone arch bridge, modern technology takes the geometry of the arch to its very limits. The reduction of the arch rise to a statically necessary minimum is combined with a twist along one axis. The latter is also responding to the bending road as a curve immediately follows the bridge in both driving directions. The res... More

Bridging Tea House

An ambitious master plan was designed for the construction of a multipurpose modern city in Jinhua. In the spirit of this plan, the local government commissioned a teahouse to be built beside a pond in a park next to the river that runs through the city. The concept was reworked formally to create a structure that also serves as a mirror—the lower part reflects the upper part, thus producing an effect of continuous space. Our first concept was totally open and functioned as a mask in relation to the neighboring pavilions. Working in collaboration with local engineers, a structure was suggested in which different platforms would be constructed for diverse uses. The translation of this suggestion gave birth to a building that contains a s... More

Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir

The pedestrian bridge associates architecture and structure inseparably. Two arches constitute the geometry of the bridge, the tender form answers to the strictness of the architectural environment. These arches are structure and pathfare at the same time. They compose a wide spanned rope and bow. The criss-crossing of the pathways permits different ways to cross the bridge and at the same time the free span of 194 meters. The overlay of the two force lines matches with the path-network.   Several possibilities linked with different perspectives are offered to the pedestrian while crossing the bridge. Three paths succeed along the arch and the bow. The middle alongside the bow reveals the view of Notre Dame and historic Paris. The ro... More

Pont de singe

This project builds on a previous piece entitled "Suspension Bridge, the passage" a model of floating bridge in the exhibition space, attached to helium balloons, thus taking literally the term "suspension bridge ". I like the idea that an object is supposed to connect two mobile space, questioning its usefulness. This bridge, floating symbol of all relationships, embodies the space surrounding its slight movements caused by our air movement. For Tatton Park Biennial dedicated to the flight, I wanted to start from the idea of "hanging bridge" for its evocative and poetic potential, but taking into account the constraints from the outside: the obligation to be securely stowed. So I reversed, with three large helium balloons, the curvature... More

Trampoline bridge

The competition brief, A Bridge in Paris, allows us to locate an architectural reflection within this same realm of contemporary urban enjoyment. We note first that the notion of happiness is often linked to Nature (« Happiness is in the countryside. » goes one common French expression). And we recognize that human beings remain nostalgic for and imaginative of a state of primal happiness, of ancestral times when body and spirit were essentially free. The city has grown to conform our movement to regular rituals and daily itineraries. It appears to us that Paris has the bridges and passages necessary for the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic across its waterways. Our intention is to invite its visitors and inhabitants to engage on... More

Pedestrian bridge

The core of the city of Covilhã, in the interior of Portugal, occupies a promontory in the southern foothills of the Serra da Estrela, visually dominating a vast and fertile landscape of relative flatness — the Cova da Beira region — which extends from the Estrela to the Gardunha and Malcata mountain-ranges. The particular topography of the territory in which the city is inscribed not only determined the form and strategies of its urban design as has, up to a relatively recent past, provided the technical and economic means for its development. In fact, the watercourses of the valleys of Carpinteira and Goldra (or Degoldra), which respectively delimit the promontory of the city to its north and south, provided the driving force for the in... Borneo-Sporenburg Amsterdam

The brief for Borneo and Sporenburg, two peninsulas in the eastern part of the Amsterdam docks, tied together two seemingly opposing ideas. On the one hand the potential of the large scale dockland area was to be exploited for water-related activities, on the other hand the brief called for 2500 low-rise dwelling units, with a density of 100 units per hectare. Taking these points of departure presented a fascinating and unique opportunity for an urban experiment. West 8 sought the solution in developing a new typology of three-storey, ground-accessed houses deviating from the usual terraced house in being strongly oriented to the private realm, in this case by incorporating patios and roofgardens. This approach is a variant upon the tra... More

Nescio Bridge

• The Netherlands’ first suspension bridge, spanning the Rhine canal 10m above the water. • Design respects the unique ecological habitat of the area. The Netherlands’ first suspension bridge carries cyclists and pedestrians over the Amsterdam Rhine canal to the new suburb of IJburg. Spanning the canal 10m above the water, the bridge allows enough clearance to give commercial boats unrestricted access to the waterway. The mono-cable, self-anchored structure curves to follow the natural course for cyclists. It splits in two at both ends to separate pedestrians from cyclists and to improve the stiffness of the structure. Arup designed the bridge’s steel spans. The section of the bridge changes fluently from a deep triangular sect... More

Bridge School

Located at a remote village, Fujian Province in China, the project does not only provides a physical function - a school + a bridge, but also presents a spiritual centre. The main concept of the design is to enliven an old community (the village) and to sustain a traditional culture (the castles and lifestyle) through a contemporary language which does not compete with the traditional, but presents and communicates with the traditional with respect. It is done by combining few different functions into one space – a bridge which connects two old castles cross the creek, a school which also symbolically connects past, current with future, a playground (for the kids) and the stage (for the villagers). A light weight structure traverse a sma... More
