Among the numerous renovation projects we undertake, a typical goal is to address deficiencies in light and outlook while strengthening connections to gardens, or to break discrete rooms into larger spaces that better cater to the needs of family life. Sage Bungalow
This newly renovated kitchen sits within an existing 1920s bungalow in Maungawhau Mt Eden, Auckland. The house, located at the end of a quiet suburban cul-de-sac, is a charming example of the Californian bungalow typology, with classic detailing, tongue and groove floorboards, high ceilings, kauri panelling and colourful leadlights among the existing features.
The back of the house however, had been modified with an aesthetically jarring 1980s addition. It looked out of place and had reached the end of its serviceable life. Working with our client, we sought to revitalise and reimagine the kitchen in ways that were sympathetic to the heritage, detail and craft of the existing bungalow. Villa Claude
Many heritage renovations, villa or bungalow, tend to involve some degree of ‘blowing out the back’ to extend living space. The footprint of this two-storey heritage villa in Epsom, however, was capacious enough, and rather required the removal of a series of ground-floor building accretions that had been added to back of the house, and their replacement with a new dining room and veranda. Throughout the renovation, the aesthetic intrusion on the existing structure is slight, with the intention being to upgrade the home to contemporary living standards without compromising its charm.

Wedge Tail
Designed for a builder client – who undertook the project during lock down – this is an example of the transformation possible when you consider an entire site as a building canvas. Additionally, it shows how outdoor spaces can be rhythmically stitched into and around a building plan. And how sheltering connections – here in the form of a complex timber screen that continues our interest in controlling light and shadow effects – creates more liminal transitions that dissolve the distinction between being inside and out.

On this project, our clients had very clear design references: a love of mid-century design, semi open-plan spaces, bricks, strong corners and views throughout the house from front to back.

Mole Architects elevates “mundane” 1960s English bungalow with new extension
Cambridge-based architectural studio Mole Architects has completed the upgrade and extension of an everyday 1960s holiday home in Aldeburgh, a town on England’s Suffolk coast. The bungalow is just a stone's throw from the sea, hence the project’s title: Stone’s Throw. The home’s existing layout was poorly arranged, its sunny side dominated by a double garage and the living space deprived of adequate sunlight. The reconfigured arrangement now incorporates a bright and airy space that looks towards the sea, elevating a somewhat “mundane” dwelling by adding contemporary flair.

In 2019, Berrel Kräutler Architekten won an open project competition for the complete renovation and extension of the Swiss Embassy in Singapore against 53 competitors. The existing chancery building, built in 1984, presents itself as a flat bungalow embedded in a scenic park landscape on the northern edge of Singapore. The architecture is perfectly adapted to the tropical vegetation and the needs of the prevailing climate. The plot size is about 50,000 sq.ft. in the heart of the city. The client being an active social person came to us with only one major requirement that he needed a home which could help him in switching between his social and family life and enjoy his home in a way that would transmute it to a resort like environment.
For a family strength of 5, he desired to have 3 Bedrooms along with 2 Guest Bedrooms, Formal and Informal Living and certain recreational amenities like swimming pool, gym and party lawn.
