Hasharon House 1

The house was planned for a young family with 3 children, on a lot with a wide open view to the back, overlooking agricultural fields. After giving a great amount of consideration to the functionality of the space and the movement scheme, we have decided to build a split level house, placing the master bedroom half way between the public area and the children's space. The scheme evolved into an L shape plan with the MBR placed in the middle, outside the L, being surrounded by its 2 wings. Since basement was not part of the requirements, we decided to hang the MBR as a cantilever, thus freeing the space beneath it, enlarging the garden and allowing interesting views across the lot. (The building code allows a space to be under 180 c... More

Beam House

This home has been designed for a client who wished to build his home next to his farm. The size of the site is 1.25 acres and is located in the rustic rural landscape of northern Israel. The design combines some of the utilitarian images of the agriculture buildings in that area, with the fascination with the ‘beam’ construction typical of a ‘country home’. The inspiration is translated to the defining lines and materials of the house as well as to the openings and views that extend from it. The house is divided into three parallel strips: private, semi private and public. By doing so, there is a possibility to have one main living section full of the northern light, while extending the backyard and the surrounding views into the public s... More

The ensemble is sited upon a solid stone and concrete platform at 80cm above a preserved agricultural field in immediate adjacency to the sea. The site offered dramatic views out to the bay, the sea beyond and the island of Naxos. The ensemble sited within the buildable area designated by the planning laws, looks to exploit the views offered by its location and to orientate all its internal and shaded spaces towards the sea and the spectacular landscape. Vaucluse House

The concept for this house was to reflect the topography and landform of the Sydney Habour basin. The house is expressed as a series of horizontal layers – the sandstone clad base echoes the stone cliffs that hug the inlets of Sydney Harbour. The upper stories of planar white rendered forms respond to the strong northern light found in the southern hemisphere. Between the cantilevered white planes, full height low-E glazing captures the dramatic harbour views whilst maintaining a thermally efficient internal environment. There was a conscious decision to contrast precise man made materials such as steel and glass with natural materials such as the locally hewn sandstone. Located in a small scale suburban street, the four storey residence... More

North Face

The existing house was built in 1969 as a twin to the neighboring building. It did not function well to the demands of 2008-living, neither in the room sizes nor in their solutions, and it had generally a need for restoration work. Element, together with the client, has come to a solution where mainly the bottom two stories are rehabilitated while the top story is replaced with a lighter and more open construction which opens up towards a grand view of the fjord. This is a big change from the earlier situation where it was necessary to go down a level to see the view. The top volume is 3 meters cantilevered over the rest of the volumes and is pulled away from the road to make room for a larger sun deck towards the south and to let m... More

Miami Residence

This weekend getaway located in South Beach, Miami was designed for a young couple. They wanted a place that was very “Miami”. As a vacation home, the apartment is occupied for a few days at a time by the client and occasionally another guest. The renovation reflects the sporadic, temporary occupation, maximizes the ocean views, and creates a relaxed, changeable, informal, open atmosphere. Existing Space The existing space included two bedrooms, a living dining area, two and a half baths, and an entry foyer. The existing configuration separated the two bedrooms from the living room using two sheetrock walls coming off of the continuous curtain wall. This cut the view into three distinct zones so that the entire expansive view could not be... More
