The Lincoln Cathedral Connected project is designed to bring economic and social benefits to the cathedral, as well as the city of Lincoln. At the core of the project is the new visitor centre, together with creation of the new Dean’s Green and re-landscaped parvis which work together to create a more engaging, dynamic and accessible spaces for visitors to enjoy the cathedral. The Monastery of Santa Monica, a sprawling complex spanning over 20,000 m2 in Cremona’s historic center, was once a military barracks before being converted into the headquarters of the University of Sacro Cuore di Cremona. The objective of the lighting project that was designed to highlight the historical and natural significance of this location, brought its rich past and unique landscape to life. In the international discourse on contemporary architecture it seems to be evident that intervention into historic buildings is always a sensitive issue. This is particularly the case when the project is not only a simple renovation, but there are alterations or additions to the original building – it is always difficult to find the balance between past and present, between the attitude of sheer preservation of a monument and the voice of contemporary architecture.
