Hall

In 1912 the city builder Anton Möller completed a factory for earthenware and fireclay goods as a branch of the company of brothers Böttcher in Varnsdorf. The building has a progressive reinforced concrete structure, was electrified and connected to a railway siding. In 2007 brewing beer with the logo of Tomcat (Kocour) was started. The subject of the proposal is a conversion of the former ceramics space into a social hall. THE MAIN IDEA OF THE SOLUTION IS THE REHABILITATION OF THE TECHNICAL MONUMENT - CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION FROM 1912 - AND ITS INTRODUCTION IN A NEW TECHNICAL AND OPERATING FUNCTION. In the original ceramics space there was a pair of damaged "H" columns, which was replaced by rods - a free space for a hall with a... More

CIty Hall

Our design goal heads toward to make the new city hall be a cultural platform to draw mainly public‘s involvement. As the existing city hall building to remain is a historical element, we would like to offer a unique architectural feature by embracing the past and making socially interactive platform through the creation of the pavilion. The space created through it can be used thoroughly for communities in and out of the space. Its interior space of the pavilion shall be used for restaurants, shops, library and exhibition, and exterior space for climbing exercise, sightseeing, rooftop cafeteria, and various other personal or public purposes upon their needs. Centering the Pavilion, the outdoor landscape is naturally expanding from i... More

Town council, Ottensheim

"Running into happy newlyweds inthe course of my working day is one of the perks of my job…"Renate Gräf, head of administrationActive citizensThe residents of Ottensheim, a pretty little town on the Danube and the oldest chartered market town in the Mühlviertel region in Upper Austria, feel quite strongly about their new town council building – not surprisingly, perhaps, as many of them were actively involved in its development. While that might not have been the original plan it’s how things worked out – and the final result is all the stronger for it. It was even rewarded with the Österreichischer Bauherrenpreis (Austrian Clients’ Award) and the Aluminium-Architektur-Preis in 2010."There were times when I think the architects were more op... More

Kiruna City Hall - The Crystal

Kiruna’s new town hall gives identity to a community on the move Henning Larsen’s design for “The Crystal” joins civic functionality and social commons, creating a living room for a relocated town   The Swedish town of Kiruna, 95 miles north of the Arctic Circle, sits atop the largest iron ore mine on the planet. The mine birthed Kiruna – And now, it threatens to erase it.   A century of mining operations has begun to destabilize the earth around Kiruna. The ground is breaking, splitting into deep rifts and falling into sinkholes – Within the century, these rifts threaten to swallow the town. In response to this threat, mining firm Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara (LKAB) has proposed a direct solut... More

Delft City Hall and Train Station

Arriving in Delft is an unforgettable experience. From the outset, Mecanoo’s idea was to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft. The station, in combination with the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that divided the city in two since 1965.Coming up the escalators, the impressive ceiling with the historic map of Delft unfolds (in collaboration with Geerdes Ontwerpen). When you look outside, you see the city and the old station as a contemporary version of Johannes Vermeer’s painting 'View of Delft’.A vaulted ceiling features an enormous historic 1877 map of Delft and its surroundings, connecting the station with the city hall. Within the stat... More

MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES DE BAZEL

The conversion and renovation of the former bank in the Vijzelstraat in Amsterdam to house the municipal archives was already a prestigious assignment and expectations were high. That allure is connected both with the genesis and symbolic value of the building and with the new public function which is at odds with the closed typology of a bank building. The new design treats the original design by K.P.C. De Bazel with respect. Firstly, many original qualities of the building, which had been lost in the course of its use, were restored to their former glory. The most prominent example of this is the restoration of the two lightwells, allowing more natural light to reach the ground floor and the inside street. Other interventions and new... More

BESTUURLIJK KNOOPPUNT (ADMINISTRATIVE JUNCTION)

When designing the ‘Bestuurlijk Knooppunt’ (City Hall) Zwijndrecht, the design focussed mainly on the end-user perspective. Today's society is becoming increasingly democratic. Citizens are being empowered. The boundary lines between officials and citizens are becoming blurred. This changing society demands a flexible administration: transparent and open. These qualities are reflected in Zwijndrecht’s City Hall. EGM created a clear, user friendly, transparent and open building where citizens and employees can easily find their way. The starting point for the design was to renew and improve municipal services, from both the interior and from the architectural perspectives. Next to a new city hall the design includes a police station, a car p... More
